Tribal art is the visual arts and material culture of indigenous peoples. Also known as Ethnographic art, or, controversially, Primitive Art, tribal arts have historically been collected by Western anthropologists, private collectors, and museums, particularly ethnographic and natural history museums.

Patterns found in Nature

Project Goal:  
Using an outline of an animal, insect or fish, fill the interior space with tribal patterns influenced by nature. Two variations of the same studies will be created. The first in black & white.  The second in color.


Directions:

1. Research an animal or insect of interest. Download image to Illustrator and carefully trace the outline. Consider using a Wacom drawing tablet for this part of the process.
2. Drawing inspiration from nature, fill the interior forms of the image with organic patterns. Be careful to make enclosed shapes when producing patterns. Keep in mind that eventually shapes will be colored in!
3. Once this part of the project is complete, save image as a ".ai".  Re-save image under a different name. This second file will be the color version.
4. Using the color guide pallet in Adobe Illustrator, select a primary, complimentary and two analogous colors to be used within your tribal study.  In addition to these colors, consider using tints and shades of color.
