Botanical Tonality Study

11/4/2016

Project Goal:
Address the 3 Tonality system of shading by producing an original botanical study and applying tonality to image so as to create the illusion of 3 dimensional forms on a 2 dimensional surface.

Directions:
  1. Research Google images for examples of various flowers and leaves.
  2. Make a new image in Adobe Photoshop.  Go File > New.  Image size should be 8.5 x11 with a resolution of 100dpi.
  3. Import selected images into Adobe Photoshop and arrange images so as to create an aesthetically pleasing asymetrical composition.
  4. Print out the Photoshop image in black & white.
  5. Using mylar paper, trace the outline or outer contours of the flower images with a graphite pencil. Once complete, flip the mylar paper onto a sheet of white drawing paper.  Graphite should now be contacting paper surface.
  6. On the back side of the mylar paper retrace line work so as to transfer the graphite onto the drawing paper surface.
  7. Once line work is complete, begin the shading process.  Recall the recent homework assignment on value scales!  Through multiple applications of shading, gradually evolve your tones so as to create consistent and smooth gradations of value within the flower shapes.
  8. As you work, consider three tones: white, mid tone and black.  Inevitably you will produce multiple tones as you evolve your drawing study.  Start by focusing on the three tones!
  9. Use cross hatching techniques to better fill in the white gaps between line strokes.
  10. If you need to regain highlights, use your kneeded eraser to re-establish white surface.

Rubrics:
  1. Create an effective composition of botanical imagery that addresses asymmetry (rule of 3rds) and makes effective use of the full sheet of paper.
  2. Accurate tracing of line work from the original images onto the mylar paper.
  3. Successfully addressing the 3-tonality system so as to create a final rendering that takes on 3D qualities.
